Are Morgan Wallen Song Titles Just Mutant Taylor Swift Song Titles?
Don't tell me this is a coincidence.
I was sitting at home listening to “I’m the Problem,” Morgan Wallen’s #1 hit, and something started bothering me—it’s just not that common to say, “I’m the problem,” and yet it’s the featured line in both his song, and Taylor Swift’s monster hit, “Anti-Hero.”
Is that strange? Well, maybe not. But it’s a lot stranger than them both using “baby” or “dance” in the title. And in the past there’s been debate around whether Morgan has copped some of Taylor’s musical moments:
You could say this kind of thing happens all the time—there are only so many notes, and so many combinations of them, and so on. You could say you can’t copyright a “feel,” anyway, and you’d be right. You could say there’s smoke…but no fire. Yet.
So I did some poking around.
I happen to know a Taylor Swift fanatic, and I asked her to go down the song titles of Morgan’s new album, I’m the Problem (“Wait, that’s the title? Sus.”), to put this “coincidence” to rest.
We made a list.
To the left, Morgan Wallen titles; to the right, Taylor titles.
“I’m the Problem” - “Anti-Hero” ( with the aforementioned hook: “I’m the problem”)
OK, fine. Got that one.
“I Got Better” - “Soon You’ll Get Better”
“Superman” - “Superman”
Weird, but…keep going.
“What I Want” - “Call It What You Want”
“Eyes Are Closed” - “Eyes Open”
Uh…
“Where’d That Girl Go” - “Get the Girl” (…and in case anyone wants to know where the girl is, Taylor found her: “Girl at Home”)
“If You Were Mine” - “Mine”
“Don’t We” - “Don’t You”
SO MANY ARE MIRROR OPPOSITES
“Lies Lies Lies” - “Stay Stay Stay”
“Whiskey in Reverse” - “Champagne Problems”
“Miami” - “Florida”
That’s eleven songs. From one album.
But: There are other albums. Wallen released One Thing at a Time in 2023.
We made another list.
To the left, Morgan; to the right, Taylor.
“Keith Whitley” - “Tim McGraw”
“Last Night” - “The Very First Night”
“Thinkin’ Bout Me” - “I Bet You Think About Me”
“Cowgirls” - “Cowboy Like Me”
“Devil Don’t Know” - “Highway Don’t Care”
NOT THE MIRRORING AGAIN. I’m giving this paper a “See Me.”
At this point, we stopped looking, and backed away from the laptop. Are there more? I bet there are, but personally, I’d seen enough.
Again, just because there’s smoke, doesn’t mean the house is on fire. But it also doesn’t mean the house is not on fire.
I’d love to know your opinion. And if he comes out with “Life of a Showman,” or “Death of a Showman,” or anything with “show” in the title, I think we’ve got enough to convict.
